Dick Tracy

Been watching 60s Dick Tracy cartoons on Netflix. I remembered liking them as a kid and still dig the stylized reinterpretations of the Gould villains, so I decided to draw them.

The show is seen asunacceptable today because of stereotype characters like Joe Jitsu up there. Back then I'd have rather seen Tracy fight the villains himself than send one of his comic relief sidekicks, but the Joe Jitsu shorts were the least disappointing to ten-year-old me. Eventually I started to like and look forward to Joe, I assume 'cause he was a polite little guy in glasses who could beat anyone up.

EDIT: Here's a color version. I used a 64-color old time comics palette for this, . I'd link to it and credit who made it -- pretty sure it was a webcomics person -- but I don't remember who it was. EDIT: It came from CO2 Comics via Ed Piskor.

Living With Insanity Retrospective

I drew three hundred installments of a webcomic called Living With Insanity. The last strip drawn by me went up a couple weeks ago.

The series will continue with a new artist, Fer Galicia, and I'm glad because it's fun to check in and see a different take on the characters.

I went through the entire archive today and picked out the strips I liked the most. Was surprised to see early ones that hold together somehow despite my haste and inexperience. I'm more confident in my ability to reach a worthwhile end result now, but I recall the fear and frustration, the sense that I'd forgotten everything I'd ever learned about comics-making whenever I sat down to do one of these.

Anyway. Enjoy. I did. And if you do, check out The Line, where I am currently the presiding art monkey.

Superman Napkin Art

It's Friday night, so I figured I'd sit here in the dark and tart up this napkin doodle.

I feel like I'm getting the hang of inking digitally, partly just from doing it a lot (see The Line) but also because I stumbled on a way to greatly improve "tip control"!:

I'd been drawing with a sheet of printer paper taped to my tablet. One night I ripped it and didn't have another piece handy. I found a pack of something called PhotoWorks Matte Photo Paper, which I figured would be too thick but turned out to be perfect -- folded in half, it gives you a nice, cushiony no-slip surface you can really bear down on.

So making lines is getting easier, though with my current single-screen setup I can't ink and see the entire drawing at the same time, so keeping things in proportion and compositionally sound can be an issue.

Project Rooftop put out a call for redesigns of Static, to be posted as a tribute to his creator, the late Dwayne McDuffie. I sat down to do one, and never finished it, and here it is.

I had hoped to do a broken-line, high-contrast Chris Samnee sort of thing with the lightning effects, and couldn't, and then couldn't decide how to accomplish something comparable with color. Even completed, I doubt I'd consider it a fitting tribute to anyone, let alone Mr. McDuffie, so here it sits.

Superman Radio Megapost

This blog has a worthwhile interview with James Lantz, who reviews the Superman radio show for Superman Homepage.

I've toyed with the notion of doing the same thing since I listened to the run of extant shows about ten years ago -- there's so much cool/fun/weird/completely insane stuff in them, and the series is seldom given its due. It was not only really good, it impacted, changed, and helped popularize Superman, comics in general, and adaptations of comics in general.

Superman is as much a product of radio as comics. The characters were created in print but it was the radio writers who solidified those characters and their relationships. Kryptonite, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, and the first Superman/Batman team-ups were all radio innovations. And bear in mind that the Fleischer cartoons, the Kirk Alyn serials and the George Reeves TV series were all adapted from the radio show, with little if anything taken from the comic books.

Amos 'n' Andy, which was specifically devised as a "comic strip for radio," laid the groundwork for actual comics properties like Superman to make the leap. The Superman brand became a powerhouse, and pushed comics further into other media. Listening to these shows, you get the sense that Stan Lee learned to tell superhero stories more from radio serials like these than comics themselves. The way the fantastic elements butt up against a recognizable "real" world and the constant interpersonal turmoil between the characters is very evocative of the early Marvel formula. Also, Superman fought a Vulture, an Octopus, and a Shark (no Rhino, alas), decades before Spider-Man.

Again, it's been over a decade since I gave them a proper listen but here are some random WTF moments from the radio eps:

-- Superman grew up in his rocketship on the way to Earth and never met the Kents. Except a few years later it turned out through shameless retconning that he didn't/did, and Smallville was presented not as a slice of Rockwellian Americana but as a fearsome Depression-ized backwater shithole.

-- The Superman/Lois Lane relationship was pretty antagonistic and romance-free, which is kinda refreshing. There's an offhand mention early on that she has a crush on him, but it's never addressed afterward. Lois is surprisingly absent from the show, played by random nobodies, until Joan Alexander takes over well into the run. The two don't even meet face-to-face, with Lois being knocked out or otherwise incapacitated when Superman shows up. When they do, Superman is standing over a dead man and Lois immediately assumes he killed him. What an ingrate!

Jimmy Olsen is much more of a significant other during that time, with the two globe-trotting and having adventures in a way I'm led to believe is more reminiscent of Terry and the Pirates than Superman.

-- Later, when the series got increasingly nuts and kiddyfied, Perry White ended up with a butler name Poco, who was of course from another planet and spoke in rhyme. The interview touches on that and even has a clip for your listening pleasure.

-- Superman flat-out killed people, or left them to harvest the lethal fruits of their own badness, with nary a second thought. Not often, and it was always kind of understated and/or at-a-distance, but it happened. He also threatened crooks with bodily harm fairly often.

-- At least once, Superman and Clark Kent had a conversation, with Superman speaking as a disembodied voice from Kent's mind. I mean, sure!

-- Lois Lane was, indisputably, a crazy bitch. Pathologically fearless, she once decided that setting fire to a room she was locked in was her best chance of escape. I like that take on the character, actually, and hope if I ever get the chance to depict her she'll have flashes of recklessness like that.

-- A peculiar conceit from the radio series that migrated to the TV version: it was not Clark Kent's glasses that disguised Superman, but Superman's uniform that disguised Clark Kent. On rare occasions when the story demanded that supporting cast memebers encounter Superman/Kent in attire not associated with either persona, it was always "Mr. Kent" they saw standing there, even without glasses.

Greatest American Hero

Watched the Greatest American Hero pilot and a couple other episodes yesterday. I found it . . . frustrating, like a lot of "classic" shows, great characters*, great theme, a good line or bit now and then but saddled with these recycled, lame-shit, girl-of-the-week plots.

Anyway I was scribbling during it, and here are a couple of the sketches and a subsequent, vaguely Ashley Holt-style fanart.

* By which I mean Katt and Culp, not the sleep-walking Connie Selleca or the outrageously annoying thirtysomething high school students.

I find it helps, when you're trying to refine a character design, to draw it repeatedly with a big fat chisel-tip marker. Makes you simplify and pluck out the most necessary details.

Dortmunder Digital Inks

I read IDW's latest Parker adaptation by Darwyn Cooke and it got me thinking about what a Dortmunder comic might look like. (Dortmunder, for the uninitiated, appeared in a classic crime novel series by the late Donald E. Westlake, who also wrote the very different but equally great Parker series.)

My attempt at Dortmunder, which turned into more much-needed tablet practice:

The expression isn't quite right in the final, can't put my finger on why, which explains why I couldn't fix it. Westlake said he pictured Harry Dean Stanton as Dortmunder, who isn't quite what I imagine when I read the books but I tried to split the difference.

First-Ever Tablet Drawing: Yay?

I bought a Wacom tablet a few years ago, futzed around with it for a few days and never used it again. Eventually I eBayed it, convinced I'd never be able to use it for art-making.

After reading Shadoweyes, the great-looking all-digital comic my internet pal Ross Campbell makes with a tablet, I decided to give it another shot. I bought a new (used) one, sat down, and felt just as hopeless at it and frustrated as before.

But since the first tablet I've learned a few things. I now know you can get alternate nibs for a Wacom pen, and that some people tape a sheet of notebook paper or something to it for added traction, and did both those things -- and discovered they're essential steps if you don't want to go insane because you feel like you're trying to draw on a sheet of glass with a plastic butterknife.

This is my first finished drawing. It took hours, way longer than ink and brush would have. I gave up on it several times. The line widths are wonky. I'm not happy with it, but I'm really happy I did it.

I started drawing in light grey with the brush tool, then "inked" it right on that same layer with black, then ran a Threshold on it to make it pure and black white -- I think most people just draw with the pencil tool but I just felt more comfortable working with a smooth brush line than the hard, blocky pencil line.

He's based on a dopey personal trainer I met. And Brandon Routh, a little, but I like B.J. and don't mean to suggest any dopeyness on his part.

I felt the need, in the wake of the movie-Thor and movie-Captain America pics that have come out, to really amp up the cartoony proportions on him, since those guys are so impressively/ridiculously built.

This is Shannon. Visually, I based her on a girl who works at a McDonald's near work, is also named Shannon, and vaguely resembled my sketchy mental version of the character. I took that as some kind of good omen I guess. Ironically (?), I spilled McLatte from that very McDonald's on this drawing and had to pen-tool the shit out of it to repair the smears. A totally unmarred original continues to elude me.

You'll notice that despite what I said in my previous post, she's just standing there in a not-interesting or revelatory fashion. That's just how it goes sometimes.

Cast Page Part 1

This was supposed to be for the cast page of the new webcomic I'm working on.

But I realized cast page art should probably tell you something about the character, so I did this version with Frank "directing" and looking a little bit like a complete asshole:

I was at a library and didn't have reference for the video camera (a Panasonic GS400, the same camera I bought a few years ago to shoot Channel 101 pilots and then never took out of the box) so I dropped a Googled image of the camera into Photoshop and traced it with the pen tool. I highly recommend this if you're looking to draw something in a cartoony way, because pen-toolin' is so tedious and annoying you'll seek out ways to break an object down into the fewest possible lines and details, which is what you should be shooting for all the time anyway. That hand is weird. God, hands!

For a while I thought Frank might look too much like David from Living With Insanity -- but if David is my "default human," Frank is just my default teenage Italian-American human. They both wear variations of things I tend to wear. And the similarity indicates to me that I'm starting to actually develop a style, I guess. Which I like. It's about time.

I was feeling pretty good about my hoodie-drawing skills after I finished these, but then I stopped by a comic store near the library and picked up the new Love and Rockets, which turned out to contain some virtuoso hoodie-drawin' by Jaime Hernandez. I feel like a failure. Good night.

Developmentation . . . izing?

Post-SPX, I've been in an unusually motivated and creative mindset. I came up with an idea for a new webcomic (actually thought of a way to take some old incomplete ideas and smoosh them together).

I've been designing a cast of characters, a pretty large cast. Lots of regulars, more than I've worked with or thought about working with before. And in almost every case I have never actually drawn them before, even if they existed in a some outline or script fragment or whatnot.

With this many people involved I need to think about contrasting head shapes and hair and body sizes -- and there are tons of female characters, most of whom are part of the same Italian family and sort of run to type. One of them suddenly became pregnant purely to set her apart visually from her sister, and with that change a lot of new notions for the story immediately popped into my head.

One more thing I've never much thought about before: FOOTWEAR DISPERSAL. I draw girls barefoot or in flip-flops whenever possible, I'm just wired in such a way that I pay more attention to their feet than their shoes. But in this case I realize I need to mix it up, differentiate. Same with hair. The last few days I'm looking at everything around me with new eyes, ravenous for details.

For instance, I saw someone in these mesh ballet slipper things, recognized them as easy to draw and visually interesting, and bam, they were issued to the most appropriate character.

For-real comic book person Nate Bellegard did a Tank Girl sketch that took my fancy, so I tried to ink it.

It deviates from the pencils too much due to ineptitude and the fact that the enlarged photocopy I traced was way blurry. And I botched the fishnet pattern on one leg so bad I had to Photoshop the whole stocking out.
